A Washington State member of the U.S. Army attempted to purchase a pack of cigarettes at the local 7-Eleven, but things took a turn after the clerk saw his military identification. Apparently, the clerk’s response left him in utter “shock” at what she had said, and now he’s calling on the company to investigate.
Collin Brown is currently a reservist for the Army, and for just about any purchase requiring identification, he uses his government-issued military ID since it has his date of birth and photo clearly printed on it, KIRO-TV reported. However, when he allegedly tried to use it at a Redmond 7-Eleven, things didn’t exactly work out too well after the cashier realized he was a part of the Armed Forces.
“She said, ‘You’re in the military?’ I said, ‘Yes,’” recalled Brown. “She said, ‘I can’t serve you.’ Honestly, I was in shock. I asked, ‘Are you serious?’”
“She looked at me like she was offended,” he added.
At first, Brown kept it between himself and his fiancée, but as soon as word spread to his friends and family, the alleged incident was posted to Facebook, where it quickly went viral. Within a short time, over 12,000 people had shared the post to military bases around the entire nation, and as you would imagine, it didn’t receive too many positive reactions.
“I think it’s understandable that people would be upset about it,” Brown said. “I think anyone in this position would be upset.”
When KIRO reached out to 7-Eleven’s corporate offices, the company representative said that Brown had “distorted” the incident and that the franchise is independently operated. They also said that the company has a history of supporting our troops.
But it wasn’t until a friend of Brown’s complained to the company that they responded publicly to the incident. Even then, they told a much different story than the reservist did.
“A customer presented a military ID as a form of identification and the store associate could not clearly read the birth date,” 7-Eleven said in a statement. “In this instance, the store associate, by law, asked to see a second form of ID.”
Brown said that’s not true. He called on the company to look at surveillance video to corroborate his version of events, and then look into retraining employees. He also said he’s not trying to cause trouble, but he felt compelled to come forward so that something similar doesn’t happen to anybody else.
“From moment one, the only thing I was hoping to do by coming forward with this is to get the issue addressed with the employee,” he said. “If you don’t know something is wrong, you can’t fix it.”
Indeed. I would have to say something is very wrong here. Regardless of the background of whoever allegedly denied Brown service, disrespecting someone who’s proudly serving our nation and defending the very freedom they’re enjoying here is disgusting, and personally, I think they should be fired. After all, you and I all know that if such discrimination occurred to another segment of the population, there would be outrage across the entire nation until the person’s life was destroyed, wouldn’t you agree?
